TikTok account banned: what to do?

How to see exactly what was blocked, how to appeal, and what you can still do if TikTok says no.

Short answer

First check what has been blocked: your whole account, only LIVE or a single video. Then appeal through Inbox, System notifications, Account updates with the Appeal button. If TikTok sticks to its decision and you live in the EU, you can also take the case to a certified dispute settlement body, such as Appeals Centre Europe.

TikTok account banned or only your LIVE: what is the difference?

  • Account ban: you get a banner notification when you log in. You can still log in to submit an appeal and download your personal data.
  • Feature restriction: TikTok can temporarily block access to certain features, such as commenting or certain creator features. The creator code of conduct also applies to TikTok LIVE, so going LIVE can be blocked too.
  • Violation: a removed video or comment counts toward your account status: Healthy, Fair, Severe or Banned.

TikTok uses both automated and human reviews. If TikTok takes action, you receive a notification about it.

How do you appeal a TikTok ban?

  1. Open the TikTok app and tap Inbox.
  2. Tap System notifications.
  3. Tap Account updates. You may need to scroll across.
  4. Tap the notification about the restriction.
  5. Tap Appeal and follow the steps.

You can check your account status and a record of your violations in TikTok Studio or via Settings and privacy, Support, Safety Center, Account check. In your appeal, explain briefly and factually why you think the decision is wrong, and take screenshots of the notification right away.

How long does a TikTok ban last?

On the help pages we read, TikTok gives no fixed duration for a ban. What TikTok does explain is how the system works:

  • Violations expire after 90 days and are then no longer taken into consideration. Your account status reflects the last 90 days.
  • Repeated violations can lead to temporary restrictions on features or to a permanent account ban.
  • For certain initial violations, TikTok offers optional in-app policy training. If you complete it, eligible restrictions may be lifted. This does not apply to severe violations.
  • Deleting a video yourself does not remove the violation.

Wrongly banned: what if TikTok rejects your appeal?

If you live in the European Union, the Digital Services Act (DSA) gives you an extra option. You can take a decision about your account or content to an out-of-court dispute settlement body: an independent organisation certified by a national authority. According to the European Commission, this is usually free of charge or low cost for users, and the platform bears the fees if you win. The decision is not binding, but platforms must engage in good faith. You can always go to your national courts as well.

One of these certified bodies is Appeals Centre Europe, which also handles TikTok cases. According to its own FAQ:

  • it also reviews decisions to suspend or disable an account;
  • the platform's decision must have been made in the last six months;
  • you can submit your case in Dutch, French or English, among other languages;
  • there is currently no user fee;
  • it aims to decide within 90 calendar days.

It cannot review everything. Decisions about an account created to get around an earlier ban, about identity verification or about accounts of people under the minimum age are out of scope. You start on the Appeals Centre Europe website with the Start Dispute button. Even if you win, TikTok itself decides whether your account or content comes back.

Tip: Do not create a new account to get around a ban. According to TikTok, that is a violation in itself and can cost you that new account too.

What should you avoid after a ban?

  • Never give your password or verification code to someone who promises to unban your account. TikTok itself never asks for them.
  • Do not wait too long with your appeal and with downloading your data. For a banned account, TikTok deletes personal data after a period of time.
  • Do not post content that breaks the rules on another account. TikTok also treats that as getting around a ban.
