Give your TikTok LIVE a boost: 10 things you control yourself

From preparation to follow-up: ten concrete steps to make your LIVE stronger, using TikTok's own features.

By Stef Boonen, co-founder and TikTok LIVE expert at Stream Performance Agency

Short answer

A real live boost starts before you tap Go LIVE: prepare your topic, go LIVE at fixed times and announce it with a LIVE Event. During your LIVE, set up your chat with moderators and blocked keywords, talk with your viewers and plan your battles and co-hosts. Afterwards, make clips from your replay. SPA cannot arrange promotion from TikTok itself: everything here is in your own hands.

1. Prepare your LIVE

Know what your LIVE is about before you start. Pick a topic or a common thread, make sure there is light on your face, a calm background and good sound, and check your internet. Fix your phone firmly in place so your hands are free for your viewers.

2. Go LIVE at fixed times

Pick a few fixed days and times each week and stick to them. Your viewers know when to find you, and you build a habit. Three times a week at a fixed time beats every day at a different moment.

3. Announce your LIVE with a LIVE Event

LIVE Events let you tell your audience in advance when you will go LIVE. Viewers can register and receive notifications about the event. This is how you create one:

  1. In the TikTok app, tap Add post + at the bottom.
  2. Tap LIVE at the bottom. You may need to scroll across.
  3. Tap LIVE Center, then LIVE Events.
  4. Tap Create an event and follow the steps.

Viewers see the time you choose in their own local time. You can also create an event from TikTok Studio, and viewers can share it from your profile. Tell people yourself as well: in a video, in your bio and at the end of your previous LIVE.

4. Set up your chat before you start

A calm, friendly chat keeps people with you. In your LIVE settings you can:

  • Add Moderators: people you trust who can report, mute or block viewers during your LIVE when they violate the Community Guidelines or send unwanted messages.
  • Under Comment settings, add up to 500 blocked keywords, each up to 30 characters. Comments with those words are not shown in your LIVE.
  • Filter spam and potentially unkind comments. This is on by default.

5. Talk with your viewers, not at them

Greet new viewers by name, ask questions and reply to comments. Tap a comment to reply to it or to put it at the top of the chat for a short time with Pin this comment, for example today's theme. If someone writes in another language, you can translate the comment into your app's language. Only you see that translation.

6. Play battles with a plan

TikTok calls a battle a LIVE match: a competition between creators in a co-host LIVE, where Gifts and likes earn points. Agree beforehand who you play with and when, announce it and explain to your viewers how the points work. Everything about starting, points and duration is in our guide to TikTok battles.

7. Team up through co-host

With co-host, several creators go LIVE together at the same time. During your LIVE, tap +Hosts at the bottom, then Invite to choose a friend (followers you follow back) or another creator. Your viewers get to know the other creator and the other way round. Pick someone who suits you, agree on TikTok beforehand what you will do together, and give each other equal space.

Viewers can join too: through Multi-guest they request to join your LIVE as a guest. This option may not be available in every LIVE.

8. Thank everyone, without pressure

Viewers support you in many ways: they watch, comment, like, share and follow. Thank them for all of it. With LIVE Gifts, viewers show their appreciation and you collect Diamonds. But giving is always voluntary: never put anyone under pressure. A LIVE where everyone feels welcome is a LIVE people like to come back to.

To go LIVE you must be 18 or older, and the same applies to sending or receiving Gifts. If you want your LIVE for adult viewers only, turn on Audience controls in your LIVE settings.

9. Make clips from your LIVE

TikTok saves your LIVE as a replay, which you can view and download for 30 days. This is how you make a clip:

  1. Tap Profile at the bottom, then Menu at the top and select TikTok Studio.
  2. Tap LIVE at the top, then LIVE recordings.
  3. Find your LIVE and tap Clip. Edit your clip, tap Next and follow the steps to post it.

A funny moment, an exciting battle or a lovely comment from a viewer: as a short video it shows people what they missed, and why they want to be there next time.

10. Look back and adjust

You learn something from every LIVE. Watch part of your replay: when was the chat busiest, when did it go quiet, what worked? Write down one or two things you will do differently next time. That way every LIVE gets a little better, and in the long run that is the best live boost there is.

Tip: Do not try everything at once. Pick two points from this list this week, for example a LIVE Event and a regular moderator, and add something new each time.
