Why can't I go LIVE on TikTok?

LIVE button missing, LIVE restricted or is it just not working? How to find the cause and what you can do yourself.

Short answer

Why can't I go LIVE on TikTok? Usually it is one of these five: you are under 18 or TikTok could not confirm your age, you don't have LIVE access yet, your LIVE is temporarily restricted after a violation, LIVE is not available in your region, or there is a technical problem. First check Inbox, System notifications, Account updates for a notification. If there is nothing there, report the problem to TikTok via Need more help?.

Can't go LIVE on TikTok? Check these five things first

  1. Your age: are you 18 or older, and has TikTok confirmed your age?
  2. Your LIVE access: do you see LIVE when you tap Add post + at the bottom?
  3. A notification: is there anything in Inbox, System notifications, Account updates?
  4. Your region: is LIVE available where you are?
  5. Your device and internet: does the rest of the app work normally?

Below you can read what may be going on for each point and what you can do.

1. You are under 18 or your age is not confirmed

You must be 18 or older to go LIVE. TikTok may ask you to confirm your age before you go LIVE, for example with a photo of your ID and selfies. Which options you get depends on where you live. TikTok is clear about it: if TikTok can't confirm your age, you won't be able to go LIVE. If you get that request, follow the steps in the app.

2. You don't have LIVE access yet: the TikTok LIVE button is missing

Tap Add post + at the bottom and check whether LIVE is there. You may need to scroll across. If LIVE is missing, you usually don't have access yet. TikTok lists 1,000 followers as a requirement, but adds that this may vary across regions. How many followers you need and which other routes exist, you can read in our guide TikTok LIVE without 1000 followers.

How to install LIVE Studio and request access for it is in our guide to TikTok LIVE Studio.

3. Your LIVE is temporarily restricted or banned

If you violate the Community Guidelines or the creator code of conduct, you can get restrictions. TikTok says the restriction depends on the severity and number of violations, and that some creator features may be temporarily restricted while your account is under review. TikTok tells you with a notification:

  1. In the TikTok app, tap Inbox.
  2. Tap System notifications, then Account updates. You may need to scroll across.
  3. Open the notification about the restriction. If you think it is a mistake, tap Appeal and follow the steps.

The help pages we read give no fixed duration for a TikTok LIVE ban or suspension: check the notification itself. How to appeal and what you can do if TikTok says no, you can read in our guide TikTok account banned: what now?.

4. LIVE is not available in your region

TikTok itself says that LIVE and Gift features aren't currently available everywhere. The requirements can also differ by country or region.

5. TikTok LIVE not working because of a technical problem

You have LIVE access and no notification, but it still doesn't work or your LIVE keeps dropping? This is our own advice, in this order:

  • Update the TikTok app and restart it.
  • Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and check that your connection is stable.
  • Restart your phone and make sure your battery is charged enough.
  • Check that you are logged in to the right account.

Still not working? Report it to TikTok. In the help article in the app, tap Need more help? at the bottom and follow the steps to submit a ticket. A screenshot of the error helps.

Why can't I go LIVE on TikTok LIVE Studio?

To go LIVE with LIVE Studio, TikTok's own program for going LIVE, you need LIVE access. One of the requirements on that help page is that your LIVE access has not been suspended recently. TikTok adds that the requirements vary by country or region and can change.

Why can't I go LIVE on TikTok as a guest?

As a guest you join someone else's LIVE via Multi-guest. That option isn't available in every LIVE, and the creator can choose to allow requests from followers only. So if you don't see the button, it is often down to the LIVE you are watching.

Watch out: don't look for a workaround. Apps, stream keys or accounts that promise LIVE without access, or a new account to get around a ban, go against TikTok's rules and can cost you your account. TikTok also never asks for your password or a verification code.

Frequently asked questions

TikTok lists 1,000 followers as the usual threshold, but says it may vary across regions. If you have those followers and still don't see LIVE, check that you are 18 and your age is confirmed, whether there is a restriction notice in Inbox, System notifications, Account updates, and whether LIVE is available in your region.
If you could go LIVE before, a restriction after a violation is the first thing to check. TikTok sends a notification about it in Inbox, System notifications, Account updates, and you can appeal from that notification. If there is nothing there, try the technical steps in this guide.
The TikTok help pages we read give no fixed duration. According to TikTok, the restriction depends on the severity and number of violations. What applies to you is in the notification in your Inbox.
The multi-guest option isn't available in every LIVE, and the creator can limit requests to followers only. If you don't follow the creator, or that LIVE has no multi-guest, you can't send a request.
According to TikTok, sending comments in LIVE may be blocked for you after a Community Guidelines violation, or the host or a moderator may have muted you. If neither applies, you can report it via Need more help? with your username and a screenshot of the comment.
Usually because you don't have LIVE access yet: you are under 18, your age isn't confirmed, you haven't reached the follower threshold for your region, or LIVE isn't available where you are. A restriction after a violation can also remove access for a while.
No. Only TikTok decides on a ban or restriction. SPA is an independent agency and not part of TikTok. What we do: read the notification with you and help you write a clear appeal.
